What is this Wholesale Application Community? You may be forgiven for asking…
An initiative of noble intent. Led by a crowd of world-wide mobile network operators, a sprinkling of handset manufacturers, and the mobile standards deity, GSMA. Under the banner of the Wholesale Application Community, they’re all valiantly fighting the mobile dragons of fragmentation.
The Daily Telegraph ran the following article at the weekend, heralding 2010 as the year that businesses embrace mobile.
Further to this revelation, Gartner forecasts smartphone owners will spend $6.2bn on apps this year, estimating this to grow to $29.48bn by 2013. Currently only 18% of apps are paid for. So these numbers give some idea of the scale in which mobile technology will grow in the very near future.

Vividly Mobile has worked closely with Jelly Bridge Productions Ltd to bring Gigglebies Garden Party to the iPhone mobile platform.
Garden Party has been hugely popular with preschools in the UK since it’s creation in 2003, where it’s been available on the PC & Mac platforms. Vividly Mobile has redeployed the game on the iPhone platform and has distributed the game to 83 countries via the Apple App Store.
Garden Party was targeted for a pre-Christmas launch and it successfully appeared on the App store globally today. The Apple review took one week exactly and Garden Party passed first time with flying colours.
Vividly Mobile will be redeploying Garden Party on Android during H1 2010.
Google’s Android mobile platform has seduced almost all the major handset manufacturers world-wide, namely HTC, Samsung, LG, Motorola, and Sony Ericsson. The only major manufacturer missing is Nokia, but there’s rumours that they too may make a late appearance to the Android party (officially known as the Open Handset Alliance). Read more »
iPhone’s end-user popularity has firmly put Apple in the driving seat with network operators. Today Vodafone the largest mobile operator in the world announced they’ll be selling the 3GS during early 2010 in the UK and Ireland.
This means that all the major players in the UK will be selling the iPhone – excellent news for consumer choice, wrt tariffs and network preference. Read more »
During this Autumn Orange will start offering both the 3G and the faster 3GS iPhones in their UK shops and through selected high street stores. Prior to this O2(UK) had a two year exclusive deal with Apple.
Whilst this competition choice is good for UK customers it’s unlikely to reduce the price of iPhones as global demand has remained extremely strong throughout the recent volatile economic conditions.
